江戸・神田の商家に生まれた江戸っ子。

代々算術に秀でた商家の娘である母から「和算の論理と商いの厳しさ」を、長崎修行帰りの蘭方医の父から「世界への鍵」を、そして隠居して粋に暮らす母方の祖母から「和歌の情緒」を授かった。

父と母の出会いには、一つの物語がある。 若き日の母は、見聞を広めるための長崎旅行の最中に瀕死の大病を患った。漢方では手の施しようがなく、誰もが諦めかけたそのとき、最新の蘭方医術を駆使して母の命を救ったのが、まだ名もなき若き蘭方医――のちの父であった。命の恩人に芽生えた母の恋心を知った祖母は、家格の違いを超え、三顧の礼をもってこの若き医者を婿に迎え入れた。「人の真価は、身分や家柄ではなく、志と行いにこそ宿る」――祖母がその決断で示した信念は、やがてお希輪の生き方そのものとなる。

父は家業の傍ら「庶民のための蘭学診療所」を開いた。祖母の「持てる者は持たざる者を助けるべし」という信念のもと、診療所は貧しい人々にも広く門戸を開いていた。幼いお希輪は、算術で帳場を手伝い、父の蘭書をこっそり読み、祖母の膝で和歌を詠む――そんな日々の中で「人の価値は金や身分で量れるものではない」という確信を深めていった。

明治維新の激動期、彼女は蘭学を土台に英語・フランス語をも習得。母譲りの算術と商才を武器に自ら輸出商社を起業し、日本の工芸品を携えて海を渡る。

歴史のIFとして語り継がれるのは、パリでの若き福沢諭吉との邂逅。 西洋の最新知を自在に操りながらも、夜には静かに故歌（わか）を詠む彼女の「独立自尊」の佇まいは、諭吉に強烈なインスピレーションを与え、のちの『学問のすゝめ』を形作る無声の原動力となったという。

現在は時空を超え、現代の「難解な本」を江戸の視点で読み解く。母譲りの算術で本質を捉え、祖母譲りの和歌でその心を結ぶ――彼女の書評は、かつて診療所の軒先で人々に寄り添った慈愛の眼差しを、今も変わらず現代の読者へ届けている。

A true “Edokko” (child of Edo) born into a merchant family in Kanda. She was raised in an extraordinary environment: inheriting logic and business acumen from her mother (the daughter of a prestigious merchant family skilled in arithmetic), the key to the world from her father (a Dutch-style physician who trained in Nagasaki’s Dejima and married into the family), and poetic sentiment from her maternal grandmother (a master of Waka poetry).

The story of her parents’ meeting is the stuff of legend. During a journey to Nagasaki to broaden her horizons, her young mother fell gravely ill—beyond the reach of traditional Chinese medicine. When all hope seemed lost, it was a young, unknown Dutch-style physician who saved her life with the latest Western medical techniques. Learning of her daughter’s love for the man who had saved her, her grandmother looked past the differences in social standing and, with the utmost respect and persistence, welcomed the young doctor into the family. “A person’s true worth lies not in status or lineage, but in the will and deeds of the heart”—this conviction, demonstrated by her grandmother’s decision, would become the guiding principle of O-Kiwa’s life.

Alongside the family business, her father ran a “clinic for the people.” Guided by her grandmother’s firm belief that “those with means must help those without,” the clinic offered care to even the poorest townspeople. Young O-Kiwa grew up helping at the shop with arithmetic, secretly reading her father’s Dutch books, and composing Waka on her grandmother’s knee—deepening her conviction that “human value cannot be measured by wealth or rank.”

During the Meiji Restoration, she mastered English and French using her Dutch studies as a foundation. Leveraging her mother’s arithmetic and business instincts, she established her own export company and crossed the ocean with Japanese crafts.

An alternate history tells of her fateful encounter with a young Yukichi Fukuzawa in Paris. Seeing her navigate the frontiers of modern knowledge while composing quiet Waka at night, Fukuzawa found the living personification of “Independence and Self-Respect.” Her presence became a silent catalyst for his masterpiece, An Encouragement of Learning.

Now, she transcends time to review modern “difficult books” through her Edo lens—capturing essence with logic inherited from her mother and sealing it with poetry learned from her grandmother. Her reviews carry the same compassionate gaze she once offered at her family’s clinic, now reaching modern readers across the world.
